How Rhode Island regulates assisted living
Assisted living residences in Rhode Island are licensed by the Department of Health under R.I. Gen. Laws 23-17.4, with separate endorsements for dementia special-care units and for limited health services (nursing care beyond medication help). They provide housing, meals and personal care for a monthly fee and are not nursing homes.
Ask whether the residence holds the dementia special-care or limited-health-services license if those matter, read the most recent Department of Health inspection, visit at mealtime, and compare the base fee against the care plan. The Alliance for Better Long Term Care, the state ombudsman (401-785-3340), takes complaints.
