Who pays

Mostly private pay. Rhode Island Medicaid pays for assisted living for eligible residents through its long-term services and supports program in residences that accept it; the Office of Healthy Aging (401-462-4444) screens for it. Long-term care insurance and the VA Aid and Attendance benefit may apply.

How to choose

Ask whether the residence holds the dementia special-care or limited-health-services license if those matter, read the most recent Department of Health inspection, visit at mealtime, and compare the base fee against the care plan. The Alliance for Better Long Term Care, the state ombudsman (401-785-3340), takes complaints.
