Assisted Living Residences in New Hampshire

New Hampshire licenses two kinds of assisted living under RSA 151: Assisted Living Residence-Residential Care (help with daily activities, medication, meals) and Supported Residential Health Care (the same plus limited nursing). Both are licensed and inspected by the Department of Health and Human Services Health Facilities Administration. Neither is a nursing home.

Who pays

Mostly private pay. New Hampshire Medicaid's Choices for Independence waiver pays for services in residences that accept it; ServiceLink (1-866-634-9412) does the screening. Long-term care insurance and the VA Aid and Attendance benefit may apply.

How to choose

Ask which of the two license types the residence holds, read the most recent Health Facilities Administration inspection, visit at mealtime, and ask what happens when care needs exceed the license. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman (1-800-442-5640) takes complaints.
