Assisted Living Residences in Maine

Maine licenses assisted housing in levels: Assisted Living Programs (apartments with services) and Residential Care Facilities, which range from small Level I-III homes to Level IV facilities of seven or more residents, all under the Department of Health and Human Services Division of Licensing and Certification (10-144 CMR Ch. 113). None are nursing homes; many Residential Care Facilities have memory-care units.

Who pays

Private pay, long-term care insurance, and for eligible residents MaineCare, which pays for care in many Residential Care Facilities (the facility must accept it). The Area Agency on Aging (1-877-353-3771) screens for MaineCare and for the state-funded program for people just over the limit.

How to choose

Ask the facility's license level and read its most recent licensing survey, visit at mealtime, ask about overnight staffing, and ask whether residents can stay as needs increase. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program (1-800-499-0229) takes complaints.
