Nursing Homes and Skilled Nursing in Connecticut

Nursing homes provide 24-hour nursing care, short-term rehabilitation after a hospital stay, and long-term care. Every Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing home in Connecticut is inspected by the state survey agency on behalf of CMS, and CMS publishes star ratings for health inspections, staffing and quality measures.

Who pays

Medicare covers up to 100 days of skilled rehabilitation after a qualifying hospital stay. Long-term care is private pay until assets are spent down, after which HUSKY Health (Medicaid), the state Medicaid program, pays for most residents. Long-term care insurance may apply.

How to choose

Look at the health-inspection rating and the staffing rating before the overall rating, read the most recent inspection report, visit unannounced, and ask about nurse turnover. A facility flagged for abuse or in the Special Focus program deserves extra questions.
