Assisted Living Residences in Connecticut

Connecticut does not license assisted living buildings. It licenses the Assisted Living Services Agency (ALSA) that provides the nursing and personal-care services inside a Managed Residential Community, and this list is every ALSA with an active Department of Public Health license. Most ALSAs are the in-house service arm of a single residence, so the agency's address is the residence; a few serve several communities or congregate housing sites. Memory-care units operate under the same license.

Who pays

Mostly private pay. The Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders and the Medicaid assisted-living waiver pay for services (not rent) in some residences and in state-funded congregate and HUD housing; the Area Agency on Aging screens for both. Long-term care insurance and the VA Aid and Attendance benefit may apply.

How to choose

Ask for the ALSA's license number and most recent DPH inspection, visit at mealtime, ask how nursing hours are staffed at night, and compare the base fee against the service plan. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program (1-866-388-1888) takes complaints and can tell you what is on file.
