Who pays

The Medicare hospice benefit covers hospice care in full, including medications and equipment related to the terminal illness. Medicaid and private insurance also cover it.

How to choose

Ask whether the hospice is non-profit or for-profit, how often a nurse visits, whether they have an inpatient unit, and what the overnight on-call response time is. CMS publishes family survey results for each hospice.
